Assisting Pastor


Born in Mobile, Alabama, the Reverend Paula E. Gilbert joined the staff of The Church of the Holy Family as Assisting Pastor for Parish Life in January 2005.  As a United Methodist clergywoman appointed to an ecumenical ministry by the bishop of the Alabama-West Florida Annual Conference, her role at Holy Family is recognized by the Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina, who has licensed her to preach and serve as a Eucharistic minister in the Diocese.  Also appointed to an extension ministry, she is an Associate Dean of Trinity College, serves as the Director of Duke University’s Office of Continuing Studies and Summer Session, and volunteers with the Duke Wesley Fellowship.

Paula is a graduate of Huntingdon College (B.A. 1974) and of Duke University (M.Div. 1977; Ph.D. in Religion [American Religious Thought] 1984).  She is married to Stanley Hauerwas.
