Evangelism & Discipleship Commission

Our Mission:  To create opportunities to introduce the Gospel to those who have never heard the words of Jesus – Evangelism.  To create, nurture and maintain opportunities for members of the parish to grow as disciples of Christ – Discipleship.

We would love to have you share in ministry with us.  Please join us for one of our regular meetings or contact one of the committee chairs below for particular questions.  Meetings are announced in the newsletter.  For more information about when and where we meet, contact our chair Summer Kinard.

Ministries Supported by the Evangelism and Discipleship Commission:

Newcomers

New folks who are interested in learning a bit more about Church of the Holy meet in the library at the start of fellowship hour on first Sundays during the school year to ask questions and hear our story in an informal setting.  Quarterly potluck dinners provide an opportunity for parishioners and new arrivals to get to know one another and a bit more about the church in a friendly meal setting.  Please contact Ann and Kevin Collins if you would like to participate in newcomer activities.

Marriage Encounter

A Marriage Encounter weekend is designed to give married couples the opportunity to privately examine their lives together...a time to share their feelings, their hopes, disappointments, joys and frustrations... and to do so openly and honestly in a face-to-face, heart-to-heart loving encounter with the one person they have chosen to live with for the rest of their life.  Encounter weekends are held a few times/year. If you are interested in attending a weekend, check out the main site for Episcopal Marriage Encounter and contact  Carol Uphoff or Kurt Uphoff.  For those who have already been encountered, monthly Spiral (M.E. reflection group) meets each month at the church.  For more information on Spiral, please contact  Carol Uphoff.

Parish Weekend

Every few years, the family of Holy Family, from babes to our seniors, gather for a weekend to hear inspiring words of a keynote speaker and to get know one another better.  We play, share, pray, work, eat, laugh and maybe shed a few tears.  Recent keynote speakers have included the Reverend Dr. Sam Wells (Dean of Duke University Chapel), and the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, and musician Kyle Matthews.  If you would like to participate in planning the next parish weekend, contact Commission Chairs Greg and Diana Richards

Small groups

Several small group opportunities will be emerging in coming months.  Details will be made available as the new groups form.  Until then, we invite you to participate in one of our existing in-home fellowship and Bible studies. For meeting information, contact Susie Post-Rust.

Hear what small group committee chair Susie Post-Rust has to say about her experience of small groups at Holy Family:   "A missionary in India is staying with me while on sabbatical from India.  We were in a small group together 20 years ago.  A local friend calls me with a business question.  We were in a small group together at Holy Family five years ago.  I need prayer for my mom.  My current small group prays.  For me, small groups have been where the church becomes real for me.  Eighteen-year-olds and eighty year olds become real friend — real brothers and sisters in Christ.  Over time as we study the bible and talk about it, we also share what's going on in our lives.  We struggle together, listen together, pray together and hold each other accountable to what we say we believe.  Somehow over time, a change happens.  The body of Christ stops being an intellectual concept, and starts becoming the hands and feet of Christ to each other, helping us all to live into our discipleship with Jesus."
