Liturgy
The Liturgy Commission supports our clergy and parishioners as we worship and pray. Our work is supported by more than a hundred volunteers who are our Acolytes, Altar Guild, Flower Teams, Bread Bakers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Musicians, the Prayer Chain, Daily Office leaders and readers, Ushers, and Servers at our weekday Eucharistic services. The Commission meets quarterly with the Rector and Assistant to the Rector to plan the liturgical and logistical aspects of our worship.
You are invited and encouraged to join us in our liturgy which is “the peoples work” Come to one of our quarterly Liturgy Commission meetings, announced in the Sunday bulletin or Family Affairs. If you are interested in a specific ministry under the Liturgy Commission umbrella, please contact the Commission Chair or the appropriate coordinator listed below.
Though our primary liturgical work is to support and enhance our Sunday and Festival celebrations of the Eucharist, Commission members also support Holy Day and weekday Eucharists, the monthly Healing Service, weddings, funerals, and the early morning Eucharists on Wednesdays during the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent.
Volunteers from the Altar Guild and the Flower Team work behind the scene to keep our worship spaces clean, beautiful, and prepared for worship. Their work is visible in the oil filled candles and flower arrangements you see each week, the Advent Wreath and Greening of the Nave at Christmas, the palms for Palm Sunday, the beauty of the Church at Easter, the votive candles at our Mary icon, the bread (prepared by the Bread Bakers) and wine at the Eucharist. Ushers, Acolytes, Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers, approved by the clergy and licensed by the Diocese, complete the visible support for our Sunday and Festival liturgies.
The Altar Guild, under the leadership of James and Annmarie Todd, continues to refine and enhance the procedures and materials used in preparing for worship and the Eucharist.
The Flower Team, led by Stepheny Houghtlin, continues to successfully experiment with new arrangements for the reredos, the Greening of the Nave, the Garden of repose, and Easter. Flowers from the arrangements are often available after the Sunday services for our ill or shut-in parishioners.
The Ushers (led by Ellie Kehoe), the Lectors (led by Liz Brignac), the Acolytes, (mentored by Sharon Updike and our Seminarians) the Bread Bakers (coordinated by Leslie Sharpe), Musicians, the Daily Office participants (coordinated by Sheryl Forbis), and the Eucharistic Ministers (coordinated by Marcia Tuttle) along with the large number of volunteers they represent provide a precious gift to our prayer and worship life.
